HEALTH CHECKS FOR CATS AND DOGS: WHAT TO EXPECT

When you meet with one of our veterinarians to get your cat or dog checked for a potential health problem, they’ll ask you some questions and then perform a thorough examination. Our vets take the time to listen and understand your concerns and limitations.

The next step is a comprehensive health check. The vet’s diagnosis and recommendations will be based on:

  • Their observations
  • Your answers to their questions
  • A visual exam
  • An auscultation (stethoscope exam)
  • Lab tests, as needed
  • Consultation with a veterinary specialist, as needed

Your vet will talk you through the exam process, explaining what they find and what it means. They’ll make sure you understand your pet’s diagnosis and what’s causing their health problems before exploring treatment and care options.

TREATMENT AND CARE: WE LISTEN TO YOU

Once your vet has made a diagnosis, they’ll talk to you about treatment and care options to get your cat or dog back on their paws. Our veterinarians consistently offer holistic solutions that can resolve the health problem or improve your pet’s wellbeing. Then they’ll adapt the treatment and care plan to meet your and your pet’s needs according to your lifestyle, means, and the available alternatives.

In delivering curative care, our vets follow the 3 Globalvet pillars:

CARE

For the care component, depending on your pet’s symptoms, your veterinarian may recommend in-clinic or at-home treatment, or a combination of both. They’ll explain the treatment plan in detail, including repercussions and side effects.

Together you’ll find the solution that works best for your cat or dog, but also for you, based on different factors like your pet’s personality and your budget, time, and lifestyle. Need to care for Fluffy or Fido at home? Your vet will:

  • Give you discharge papers
  • Demonstrate certain techniques
  • Answer any questions
  • Provide follow-up care

NUTRITION

Your pet’s nutrition can be a key factor in any treatment plan. Whether the goal is to get your pet to take their medicine, prevent other problems, or improve their current condition, your vet may recommend or prescribe a special diet or food strategy. Obviously, just as it comes to care, your vet will always listen and respect your and your pet’s limitations.

BEHAVIOUR

Some pet health problems can be stress-related or a side effect of not having a healthy outlet for natural instincts. To provide proper treatment and make sure the problem is gone for good, your vet may make recommendations to enrich your pet’s environment, keep them stimulated, or reduce their stress. They’ll also teach you some techniques to help you administer any medications your cat or dog may need to take.

To better understand these recommendations and learn to live with your cat or dog and their natural instincts, visit the Behaviour section of our website.

POSITIVE APPROACH TO WELLNESS (PAW) CERTIFICATION: FOR FEAR-FREE CONSULTATIONS

A health exam can be very stressful for your cat or dog, especially if they already don’t feel very well. All Globalvet veterinary clinics are Soins Sans Stress (SSS) certified, which means our teams go out of their way to make sure your pet feels calm and comfortable before, during, and after their visit to the clinic.
