Nervous about trimming them? Don\u2019t worry\u2014Globalvet has some tips to make it easy and painless for you and your fur baby!<\/p>\n<div><span lang=\"EN-US\">Before grabbing the clippers, get your dog used to having their paws touched. It\u2019s also a good idea to show your dog the clippers and create a positive association in their mind. Then all you have to do is pick the right position and the right moment\u2014andclipping those nails will be a breeze! <\/span>To learn more about the basic rules for pet hygiene, <a href=\"https:\/\/globalvet.ca\/en\/2021\/06\/03\/basic-rules-for-dog-and-cat-hygiene\/\">read our article<\/a>.<\/div>\n<h3><strong>NAIL ANATOMY<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>Dogs\u2019 nails are made of a hard substance similar to your own nails,\u00a0<span lang=\"EN-CA\">with a sensitive and vascularized core\u00a0<\/span>inside called the quick. The key is to avoid the quick and cut just the hard tip of the nail.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-29699\" src=\"https:\/\/globalvet.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/06\/Sans-titre-300x156.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"362\" height=\"188\" srcset=\"https:\/\/globalvet.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/06\/Sans-titre-300x156.png 300w, https:\/\/globalvet.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/06\/Sans-titre-600x313.png 600w, https:\/\/globalvet.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/06\/Sans-titre.png 698w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 362px) 100vw, 362px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>If your dog\u2019s nails are white, you\u2019ll be able to see a little pink triangle at the base of the nail where the quick is. If your dog\u2019s nails are black, you won\u2019t be able to see where the quick is. However, if you get close to the quick when you cut the nails, you\u2019ll see a small light grey dot in the centre of the clipped part of the nail. The closer you get to the quick, the rounder the nail is. You can also use corn starch to stop the bleeding quickly.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>You can pick up everything you need <a href=\"https:\/\/globalvet.ca\/en\/find-a-clinic\/\">at one of our stores.<\/a><\/p>\n<h3><strong>CLIPPING THE NAILS<\/strong><\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>Trim just one nail a day to start.<\/li>\n<li>Clip off small bits of nail until you see the quick.<\/li>\n<li>As your dog gets used to having their nails clipped, you can gradually start clipping more nails at a time.<\/li>\n<li>Don\u2019t forget to trim the dewclaw on the inside of the front paws.<\/li>\n<li>What to do if a claw bleeds:\n<ul>\n<li>Stay calm\u2014it happens to everyone, even professionals!<\/li>\n<li>Put gentle pressure on the base of the claw.<\/li>\n<li>Wipe the blood off with a paper towel.<\/li>\n<li>Put some styptic powder on the end of the claw.<\/li>\n<li>Hold for a few seconds.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Are your dog\u2019s claws getting long?
