However, the idea of trimming your furry friend\u2019s claws might make you nervous and afraid you\u2019ll hurt them. Fear not\u2014Globalvet has some advice for you to make sure everything goes smoothly!<\/p>\n<p>Before you trim your cat\u2019s nails, get them used to having their paws touched. It\u2019s also a good idea to create a positive association in your cat\u2019s mind with the clippers. For information on all the basic pet care rules to follow before you start, <a href=\"https:\/\/globalvet.ca\/en\/2021\/06\/03\/basic-rules-for-dog-and-cat-hygiene\/\">see our blog post on the subject<\/a>.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>NAIL ANATOMY<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>Cats have retractable claws, meaning they draw them back up into their paws when not in use. You can get a cat to extend their claws by pressing gently on the pad of their paw.<\/p>\n<p>The nails are made of a hard substance similar your own nails, with a sensitive bundle of nerves inside called the quick that looks like a small pink triangle at the base of the claw. The part you need to cut is the sharp, hook-shaped tip of nail that grows past the quick.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-29699\" src=\"https:\/\/globalvet.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/06\/Sans-titre-300x156.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"375\" height=\"195\" srcset=\"https:\/\/globalvet.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/06\/Sans-titre-300x156.png 300w, https:\/\/globalvet.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/06\/Sans-titre-600x313.png 600w, https:\/\/globalvet.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/06\/Sans-titre.png 698w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 375px) 100vw, 375px\" \/><\/p>\n<h3><strong>WHAT YOU NEED<\/strong><\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>Your pet\u2019s favourite treats<\/li>\n<li>Good quality, sharp nail clippers to make the job easier. Use scissor-style clippers, rather than guillotine clippers. You can buy these clippers in <a href=\"https:\/\/globalvet.ca\/en\/find-a-clinic\/\">our stores.<\/a><\/li>\n<li>For kittens, you can also use regular nail clippers sold at the pharmacy.<\/li>\n<li>Styptic powder to stop any bleeding (e.g., Fast Klot\u00ae). You can also use corn starch to stop the bleeding quickly.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3><strong>CLIPPING THE NAILS<\/strong><\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>Trim just one nail a day to start.<\/li>\n<li>Clip off small bits of nail until you see the quick (the pink part of the nail).<\/li>\n<li>As your cat gets used to having their nails clipped, you can gradually start clipping more nails at a time.<\/li>\n<li>Don\u2019t forget to trim the dewclaw on the inside of the paw.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h4>What to do if a claw bleeds:<\/h4>\n<ul>\n<li>Stay calm\u2014it happens to everyone, even professionals!<\/li>\n<li>Wipe the blood off with a paper towel.<\/li>\n<li>Put some styptic powder on the end of the claw.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Clipping your cat\u2019s nails is something you need to do regularly.
