We recommend giving your pet\u2019s ears a quick check once a week to see if they need to be cleaned. If they do, how should you properly go about it? Do you clean a dog\u2019s or cat\u2019s ears the same way you clean your own? Globalvet has all the info you need to quickly and easily clean your pet\u2019s ears.<\/p>\n<div><span lang=\"EN-CA\">Before cleaning their ears, it\u2019s important to get your pet used to having their ears touched. There are a few basic guidelines you can follow to make sure everything goes smoothly. <\/span>Read our advice <a href=\"https:\/\/globalvet.ca\/en\/2021\/06\/03\/basic-rules-for-dog-and-cat-hygiene\/\">in our article on the subject<\/a>,\u00a0<span lang=\"EN-CA\">which also includes everything you need to know about the best positions to keep your pet in while grooming them to keep them comfortable, \u00a0and the best times to perform the grooming.<\/span><\/div>\n<h3><strong>EAR ANATOMY<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>Your pet\u2019s outer ear is divided into three parts: the pinna, the vertical ear canal, and the horizontal ear canal.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>The pinna is the outer part of the ear that you can see.<\/li>\n<li>The ear canal starts at the base of the pinna and stops at the eardrum. It is shaped like an L.<\/li>\n<li>The section before the bend is called the vertical canal, and the section after the bend is called the horizontal canal.<\/li>\n<li>The eardrum (or tympanic membrane) separates the outer ear from the inner ear.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-29680\" src=\"https:\/\/globalvet.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/03\/DessinOreilleChien-300x232.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"393\" height=\"304\" srcset=\"https:\/\/globalvet.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/03\/DessinOreilleChien-300x232.jpg 300w, https:\/\/globalvet.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/03\/DessinOreilleChien-600x464.jpg 600w, https:\/\/globalvet.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/03\/DessinOreilleChien.jpg 764w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 393px) 100vw, 393px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>When cleaning your pet\u2019s ears, you need to clean the pinna, but also the ear canal up to the eardrum. Dogs and cats have much longer ear canals than humans do. A Labrador\u2019s ear canals can be up to 10 cm long! You can feel the canal by touching the base of the ear under the pinna.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>\u00a0WHAT YOU NEED<\/strong><\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>Your pet\u2019s favourite treats<\/li>\n<li>Ear cleaner for dogs and cats, <a href=\"https:\/\/globalvet.ca\/en\/find-a-clinic\/\">available at your local veterinary clinic<\/a><\/li>\n<li>A bowl of hot water<\/li>\n<li>A makeup remover pad, paper towel, or cotton ball<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3><strong>CLEANING THE EARS<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>Follow these steps to clean your fur baby\u2019s ears.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Place the bottle of cleaner in a bowl of hot water to bring it up to body temperature.<\/li>\n<li>Lift you pet\u2019s ear with your thumb and forefinger to expose the ear canal opening. Gently place the palm of that hand on their head for stability and so you don\u2019t pull on their ear.<\/li>\n<li>With your other hand, fill the ear canal with cleaner until you can see liquid at the opening.<\/li>\n<li>Massage the base of the ear for 30 seconds to 1 minute. Do it gently so you can hear the swishing sound of the liquid.<\/li>\n<li>Soak up any excess liquid with a makeup remover pad, paper towel, or cotton ball.<\/li>\n<li>Let your pet shake their head.<\/li>\n<li>Wipe any residue off of their ears.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>If you need to, play with your pet for a while until they calm down enough for you to clean their other ear.<\/p>\n<p>You should clean your pet\u2019s ear when:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>You notice a buildup of earwax. Note that the amount of earwax an animal produces can widely vary \u2014 adjust how often you clean your pet\u2019s ears accordingly.<\/li>\n<li>Your pet has been swimming and may have water in their ears.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Remember, this grooming session is an opportunity to spend time with your pet\u2014it will bring you closer together.
