Some 95% of dogs with diabetes have this condition, which can be controlled with insulin.<\/p>\n<p>Be on the lookout for the 4 early signs of diabetes in your dog:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Polydipsia, or excessive thirst<\/li>\n<li>Polyuria, peeing more often and in larger amount.<\/li>\n<li>Polyphagia, or excessive appetite (they eat non-stop and are never satiated)<\/li>\n<li>Weight loss<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Risk factors for developing sugar diabetes include:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Genetics<\/li>\n<li>Age\n<ul>\n<li>While the disease can appear in dogs of any age, it\u2019s more common in mature dogs (over age 7).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>Sex\n<ul>\n<li>Female dogs are about twice as likely to get diabetes than their male littermates.<\/li>\n<li>This correlation was demonstrated in studies conducted by Panciera in 1990 and Goossens in 1998.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>Obesity<\/li>\n<li>Concurrent conditions that contribute to insulin resistance<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>According to studies led by Guptill in 1999 and Hess in 2000, certain dog breeds are at higher risk of developing diabetes mellitus, including:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Australian terriers<\/li>\n<li>Standard and miniature schnauzers<\/li>\n<li>Bichons fris\u00e9s<\/li>\n<li>Spitz<\/li>\n<li>Fox terriers<\/li>\n<li>Miniature and toy poodles<\/li>\n<li>Samoyeds<\/li>\n<li>Cairn terriers<\/li>\n<li>Keeshonds<\/li>\n<li>Maltese<\/li>\n<li>Lhasa apsos<\/li>\n<li>Yorkshire terriers<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>While there is no cure for diabetes mellitus, we know it can be controlled with a combination of insulin, exercise, and nutrition.<\/p>\n<p>Is your dog living with diabetes?
