Aging causes brain cell damage, which can lead to behavioural changes and a loss of vitality in your once-perky pup.<\/p>\n<p>You may start to notice them acting differently. Behavioural changes may be due to your dog\u2019s advanced age, but they may also be signs of cognitive dysfunction.<\/p>\n<p>Consider this: Half of all dogs age 8 and up show early signs of brain aging. That means your dog has a 50% chance of developing a brain condition.<\/p>\n<p>One of the most common ones is cognitive dysfunction syndrome (CDS), an age-related neurodegenerative disorder characterized by gradual and progressive cognitive decline. The equivalent in humans would be early-stage Alzheimer\u2019s disease.<\/p>\n<p>Interesting fact: CDS is most likely underdiagnosed. Why? Because many human companions, when they see CDS-associated signs and changes in their mature dog, write them off as a normal part of the aging process.<\/p>\n<p>What are the signs of a potential cognitive disorder in a dog? They vary considerably from one animal to the next and, as we mentioned, they often resemble the normal effects of aging.<\/p>\n<p>That said, there may be certain unpleasant behavioural changes, such as:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Separation anxiety<\/li>\n<li>Accidents in the house<\/li>\n<li>Phobias<\/li>\n<li>Night waking<\/li>\n<li>Lack of enthusiasm<\/li>\n<li>Disorientation, when your dog doesn\u2019t recognize familiar people and has difficulty getting around things<\/li>\n<li>Excessive vocalization<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The side effects of brain aging can be very stressful for your dog. Not to worry! There are ways to relieve and manage the symptoms and help your dog continue to age gracefully.<\/p>\n<p>Multimodal treatment of cognitive dysfunction syndrome includes a combination of approaches, such as:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Environmental adjustments<\/li>\n<li>Dietary changes<\/li>\n<li>Medicine<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>You may need to use one or more of these methods, depending on your dog\u2019s needs and how their illness has progressed.<\/p>\n<p>Advances in canine medicine and nutrition, a proper diet, and the advice of your veterinarian can help limit the effects of brain aging in your dog.
