{"id":20979,"date":"2021-01-12T14:57:17","date_gmt":"2021-01-12T19:57:17","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/globalvet.ca\/?page_id=20979"},"modified":"2021-01-21T13:27:09","modified_gmt":"2021-01-21T18:27:09","slug":"kidney-health","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/globalvet.ca\/en\/nutrition\/nutrition-dog\/dog-specialized\/kidney-health\/","title":{"rendered":"Dog kidney health"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2>Chronic kidney disease: A lifelong condition<\/h2>\n<p>Chronic kidney disease (CKD) is a generic term referring to a functional or structural abnormality in one or both of your dog\u2019s kidneys lasting more than 3 months. Loss of kidney function from CKD is irreversible and progressive. That means your dog will have to live with failing kidneys for the rest of their life.<\/p>\n<p>Renal dysfunction gets progressively worse over a period of months to years. The International Renal Interest Society (IRIS) identified 4 stages in the disease\u2019s progression based on severity, with treatment recommendations at each stage.<\/p>\n<p>CKD most often occurs in older dogs, although it can strike at any age. Studies suggest certain breeds may be predisposed to kidney failure, including:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Shar-Pei<\/li>\n<li>Bull terriers<\/li>\n<li>English cocker spaniels<\/li>\n<li>Cavalier King Charles spaniels<\/li>\n<li>West Highland white terriers<\/li>\n<li>Boxers<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>How can you tell if your dog has CKD? Keep an eye out for clinical signs like:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>An increase in urine output (i.e., peeing more)<\/li>\n<li>An increase in the frequency of urination (i.e., peeing more often)<\/li>\n<li>An increase in thirst<\/li>\n<li>Reduced appetite<\/li>\n<li>Vomiting<\/li>\n<li>Unusual breath<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Unfortunately, a dog may have already lost two-thirds of their kidney function by the time symptoms appear. And once chronic kidney disease has developed, it can\u2019t be reversed.<\/p>\n<p>The best thing to do is to take your pup in for regular checkups and, if you have a senior dog, have their blood tested once a year. Your vet can tell how well your dog\u2019s blood is being filtered and detect CKD before it does irreparable damage to the kidneys and other parts of the body.<\/p>\n<p>If your dog has been diagnosed with kidney disease, there are ways to help them live better and longer. Medical treatment and nutrition management can make your dog more comfortable and extend their lifespan.<\/p>\n<p>Nutritional support is key to managing and treating chronic kidney disease.
